[Poll #898603]

I went to a small party on New Year's, nothing terribly exciting but fine. Pretty much everyone I actually like at my school was there, so, y'know, maybe 15 people. Hahahah. god i'm going to be glad to get out of here.

So I'm working on my holiday wish list on Amazon, and I saw Supernatural S1. And y'know, I've heard a lot of good things about the show (and the actors!) but I don't know if I would actually like it. I like shows with lots and lots of character development, and when the plot is things happening to the characters rather than the plot being something that would happen anyway and the characters just happen to be there (which is why I love QaF and PoT and why I stopped watching Lost early season 2. It became so much about these random things happening and the characters reacting to them instead of about the characters themselves, if that makes sense.) I also don't like lots of violence and horror--although I can watch it if it's not excessive or gratuitous, if that's the only thing going for a show or movie I won't be interested. I am also unsure but open minded regarding those other inital shows. Um. BSG? and SG something? Hahaha, I don't even know what they stand for, I just know they are space cowboys sorts of things, right? What do you all think?

And, for the record? When I say I've watched Prince of Tennis and Queer As Folk and Lost? I mean that's all I've watched, ever. And a few episodes of Gilmore Girls and that's it. So any show you want to recommend would be acceptable. :)

Please please comment if you have more to say. I left this open so that people could bounce ideas off each other, but if anyone wants me to lock it, let me know. I realize this could get personal.

You guys saw the interview JKR gave, yeah? In it she said:

Always plan your work; writing aimlessly sometimes throws up a good idea or two, but it is no way to produce a whole story.

and, it kind of made me pause. I was curious to see what other people thought, so, yay, a poll!

poll! )

For me, I rarely bordering on almost never outline, and when I do, I end up ignoring the outline anyway, so it's not the most useful thing for me. However, I don't write long WIPs, either, so that might make a difference. In general though, when someone is speaking about writing, I have issues with the words "always" and "never". I can't think of a single rule that couldn't be broken in some kind of situation. Maybe very very rarely, but writings can be so different and diverse and creative that it doesn't feel right to say "You have to write like this or you FAIL AT LIFE!"

Thoughts? Please, share them!

So, should I go see Rent? It's $40, and I'd have to pay myself. I have the money, but I'd have to take it out of my bank account set aside for car or laptop, depending.

Also...I've got this friend who I love a lot. But, in her latest post the font was bright, bright blue, and every sentance ended in an exclamation point. Even though she was talking about her dad having surgery, and being really confused about life in general. Does being really annoyed at that make me a bad friend?

Mer. LJ has been pissing me off today. That's the second time I did a nice long complicated post and it went away. Ok, anyway.

I didn't sleep well last night. Not only did I worry/cry about things that were over months ago (I still hold that "Your parents are in the hospital" are the scariest words anyone can hear. Maybe not the worst, but the scariest), but I ultimately defined my political views in one single statement:

It's no one's business but yours what you do with your body, time, or money--unless someone else is getting hurt

By using that, it's very easy to make my stand on most things. One area that I had a bit of trouble with, though, was abortion. I've always been rather pro-choice, but--is the unborn baby counted as a person being hurt? It's possible, but there are situations where the baby would be hurt worse if it were born--if the mother didn't want it or were physically, financially, mentally, or emotionally incapable of raising a child. There are also situations where it would be medically unsafe for the mother to have the baby. I think it comes down to this: Abortion is, quite simply, a lose-lose situation. The child could be hurt whether it is born or not, and the mother could be hurt whether it's born or not. As there is no standard, no hard and fast rule, the government cannot possibly regulate it. As such, it should be the decision of the mother, and only the decision of the mother.

And, a
