So I'm working on my holiday wish list on Amazon, and I saw Supernatural S1. And y'know, I've heard a lot of good things about the show (and the actors!) but I don't know if I would actually like it. I like shows with lots and lots of character development, and when the plot is things happening to the characters rather than the plot being something that would happen anyway and the characters just happen to be there (which is why I love QaF and PoT and why I stopped watching Lost early season 2. It became so much about these random things happening and the characters reacting to them instead of about the characters themselves, if that makes sense.) I also don't like lots of violence and horror--although I can watch it if it's not excessive or gratuitous, if that's the only thing going for a show or movie I won't be interested. I am also unsure but open minded regarding those other inital shows. Um. BSG? and SG something? Hahaha, I don't even know what they stand for, I just know they are space cowboys sorts of things, right? What do you all think?

And, for the record? When I say I've watched Prince of Tennis and Queer As Folk and Lost? I mean that's all I've watched, ever. And a few episodes of Gilmore Girls and that's it. So any show you want to recommend would be acceptable. :)

[Poll #880938]

Feel free to rave about your show(s) in the comments. Convince me!

When I was first watching SPN, the first seven episodes were really kind of meh, in that I enjoyed watching the show, and the guys were ridiculously hot, but there just...wasn't really a spark for me.

BUT THEN. OMFG. After the eighth or ninth episode, apropos of NOTHING, I just. I can't even describe it. SPN STOLE MY SOUL. This SWITCH flipped inside my brain and THERE WAS NO LOOKING BACK! Sam and Dean's epic love for each other will pwn you in the end, no question. The show just gets better and better as the season progresses, and now? In Season 2? I CANNOT DESCRIBE TO YOU THE TOTAL AMAZINGNESS AND HUGE GAY BROTHERLOVE.

...and that is my considerably-more-that-two cents. :D!

I don't find it even remotely scary. Like, at ALL. Which is part of the reason I was meh about it at first, maybe? I was expecting it to be scary and it totally wasn't. But I don't get scared by anything, really, even crazy-scary horror movies, so I am not that reliable. Sam is a big wimp, though, and it's only scared her like...twice, ever. And not really very much even then. More like startled. It's definitely not gory at all.

House on the other hand is yes-gory. You see people getting operated on and bones breaking sometimes and definitely blood and inside-the-body-cam when shit goes wrong.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the gory is very much a prominent feature in House. Damn. You should the DVD's with someone else, then, and have them skip to all the people-interaction parts, because those are LOVE.

Wow, um. Verbs are important, too. Like, you should watch someone else's DVD's with them. haha

I've never actually seen Supernatural *shrug*.

Haha, yes'm, I love the Jacks, and it's a piccy of Andrew McMahon *nodnod*.

Oh dear haha, it's a very interesting show, I don't even know what's so addicting about it, I'm certainly not much for the hospital shows considering both of my parents are doctors, but it's just like, wow! Haha, hmm *shrug* lets see... Well the basic plot is these interns at Seattle Grace (a teaching hospital, where the interns are not slaves! hehe) are learning about medical practice, and about life (not to mention having lots of drama). Hmm, I suppose it's one of things you have to see, because if I ramble on about the plot and such it'll give everything away. I am having a Grey's Anatomy marathon though, sometime over Christmas break if you'd like to come and check it out hehe :).

I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Series. Buffy is a mix of horror/comedy/drama, with lots of character development concerning the main characters. It's a good show. :D

Angel the Series is a spin-off of Buffy with a few of the main characters. It's more of a mix of crime/comdey/horror/drama, and ldghdakjghldskjhgaldkhg. Again, lots of character development and, just, yes. Plus, there is WESLEY. omgomgomg icon! :D

But, yes. They're both great shows, and if you decide to start watching them, and pick them up, you should know that Buffy has 7 seasons, and Angel has five. Angel begins during Buffy's 4th season, so you should get through the first three Buffy seasons before you begin Angel if you want to go in order.) :D

Also. Grey's Anatomy is a good show. Again, good character development. And my sister tells me good things about Veronica Mars and Supernatural, but I have not actually watched them.

Er, Buffy and Angel are both completed shows. I wasn't sure if you meant only current-airing or anything. So I went with them anyway.

The horror isn't scary, like, omgthereisbloodeverywhere!scary, but it's still pretty cool.

Yes, vampires omg. But there are other monsters, too. Like, Seth Green plays a werewolf-in-a-band, and there are witches and other cool monsters like this snake thing that sorta looks like Voldemort and other ones. The good thing is that the monsters don't take away from the character like they would in the movies, but kinda add to it all. It's all very cool. I think you'd like it. :D

There is medical-ness in Grey's Anatomy, but then most of the show takes place in a hospital. But it's not as bad as, like, ER would be. I mean, there is medical lingo and stuff, but it doesn't take away from the characters, which are the focus of the show. In fact, a lot of the cases are really funny and sometimes tie into the plot (and sometimes don't). Like, there's one where two people got stuck together having sex, and it's so funny omg. :D

...depends on your definiton of gory. >.> I don't think it's all that bad. I mean, I've seen worse on CSI, but I know people who won't watch the operation scenes because they think it's vomit-worthy.

Hrm. Maybe you could tape them and then forward through! ...or not. :(

You might like Bones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bones_%28TV_series%29). It's a crime drama, sorta like CSI, but without most of the gore since, like the title says, they're working with bones most of the time. There is lots of character development and romantic chemisty in that one. :>

And while I'm on Wiki, the links to Angel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_%28TV_series%29), Buffy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer), and Grey's Anatomy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey%27s_anatomy).

I keep hearing good things about it, and my sister actually has the first season, I'm just sorta lazy and haven't actually sat down to attempt watching it. I probably should sometime. :)

Hehe yes, you defintely should! It's worth the time *nodnod* I have all of the episodes hehe, it's up there in my love for Grey's Anatomy-ness. Haha, I'm lazy too :) I have so many things I should be watching, it'll happen eventually...

Well, let me put this out there that I am in no way helpful at all. Never seen a LICK of that show and never been inspired to watch it as I don't do scary stuff! I also don't hear much of it from teh flist, except one post about the two main characters, whiiiich didn't really make sense as I got the impression they were brothers? But, fandom is as fandom does I suppose. :o)

Also, you're more into the acronyms than I am. No clue what those are that you mentioned, but I see BSG a lot on here.. But everytime I read it, I mistake it for BSC, and think of the Babysitters Club. LOVE! :o)

I love this show.

Arrested Development is only for people who can see that things are funny without a laugh track. It's for people who like disfunctionality. Perhaps it's for people who sometimes feel like they are the only sane person in the midst of a sea of incompetence. It's for people who see the comedy of being liberal. It's for people who like magic tricks. It's for people who aren't afraid to cry when they realize there are only three seasons. It's worth it. It's hilarious.

Beware: First watch is a little "WTF?!" Second watch is, "LOL OMG WTF!!!" You learn to like it.

See the multiple votes for House? House rules the world. Pretty soon he will rule your mind and start dueling with Brian. Then the wives will have to drag them apart, one of them luring House with Vicodin, and the other looking like Sex Walking Away From Brian Which Must Immediately Be Righted.

Also, I agree that Buffy and Angel are crack. And sometimes, the canon itself has some pretty crack-y stuff. Makes crackfic a lot easier to write, I think -- not that I write it, but OMG they had a musical episode. A MUSICAL.

I've heard some pretty good stuff about Battlestar Galatica, even from non-geeky people. I think it's worth trying if it gets that kind of praise.

Okay. Supernatural. Um.... Prettiness abound, in the music and the boys, and yes, the characters are v. good. There is quite a bit of plot but the characters MAKE the show. Without them, the show is crap. Crap sci-fi & dubious amounts of testosterone. Instead, you get an amazing show and a LOT of testosterone to keep things pumping. Wheee energy and anger!

Wives = everyday codenames for Justin and Wilson :P

Okay, so, yeah, no House because a lot of the conversation deals with the patients, which deals with the gore, and ... yeah. But last week, House and Wilson had a fight and, as my friend says, "Mommy and Daddy had a fight and now the Baby Ducklings don't know who to follow." Personally, though, if House/Wilson weren't practically married, it'd be like House/everyone.

When you get SPN, do post about what you think of it, will you? :)

If you like character-driven shows, you can't get much better than The Wire. I don't even like the 'gritty cop show' genre but this one isn't typical at all, it's much more focused on complex characters rather than the 'whodunnit' aspect. The violence depicted is expected, considering the issues that are dealt with (gangs, drugs, corruption) but IMO it's never gratuitous. With that said, the show's definitely not for everyone what with the foul language and nudity (hey, it's HBO!) and it's a little difficult to get into at first.

It's been ages since I've watched anything else, actually. I think the last good network show was Arrested Development which had the misfortune to be aired on Fox.
