I finished watching Friday Night Lights! Or at least, I'm up to current canon. Seriously guys, this is one of the best shows I've ever watched. From the bits and pieces I'd heard discussed or read about, I assumed that it was just all about football and so I didn't want to watch, and I was thrilled to find that actually, it's about people, and I love people. And sure, there might be a plotline about who's going to start in the upcoming game, say, but it's not actually about the game, it's about how making the decision is upsetting Coach Taylor, and how Matt will feel if he doesn't play, and pressure and responsibility and compassion and loyalty.

A lot of dramas that are really just about people when you boil it down, like FNL is, are over the top and a little campy, and everyone is just that little bit smarter or funnier or bitchier than anyone you actually know in real life. And while there are definitely some Characters in FNL, some people who are over the top--it's so believably them, and you sort of get the feeling that anyone who was placed in those circumstances would be equally [cocky righteous out-spoken etc.]. It's not just that they were written that way, but that the circumstances the show placed them in forced them to be that way, which makes it feel so much more genuine.

And if you want to be shallow/flail with joy...

TIM. MTFKING. RIGGINGS.

OK so, let's start off with this. How could you not love this face/body/holey wardrobe/shirts that he can never manage to close AND LET'S BE HONEST WHY WOULD HE:

Right so we've got the sheer attractiveness factor out of the way (oh hang on THESE TOO JESUS THIS MAN MAKES ME WEAK)

OK now that we've established there is some SERIOUS PRETTY going on here, let's talk about how Tim who is alksdjflsakdjf. I can't even--he's like, on first impression this terrible dick of a guy, cocky and cocksure, lives to drink and fuck and play football, shows up to practice hungover, lives with his brother who's not much better than he is (BTW the Riggins brothers have a pretty fucking awesome dynamic/bond, for all you SPN fans who are into that!

right so he's this total fuck up of a kid, rally girls do his homework, he's going nowhere fast, etc. etc. etc., and then you get to know the guy and you realize that, he is the most regularly, solidly supportive, sweetest person on the entire show (which is saying something!). Drunk at a party? He'll get you home, and then take the blame for you and not say a word. Gutter broken? He'll fix it without telling (or asking you). Need to go to fucking Mexico? Dude, he's there. In my humble opinion, this poor kid just wants to be loved, not for his looks or his talent, but just, for him, for Tim. AND GOD DO I LOVE HIM.

It's not a secret that I have a weakness for the badboy with a heart of gold (why hello there Brian Kinney!), and this is no exception. All the characters of this show are really tremendous, even the ones I don't like!, but Tim Riggins melts my heart without even trying.

As a Texas Girl, this show makes me smile SO BIG! FINALLY! A show about Texas life that has REAL PEOPLE in it rather than bumbling idiots. Even the more stereotypical characters (Riggins, Buddy, etc.) turn into these... whole people who you just... know.

I love the subtle-ness of the writing and the slow and amazing character shaping and the fact that it is NOT IN THE DESERT. Sure, there are some little quibbles I have here and there, and there were some plots that made me say WTF, but for the most part... it might be the most finely crafted TV show EVER. And for rlz, if Connie Britton doesn't get an emmy sometime soon for playing Tami... the world is NOT FAIR.

Welcome to the FNL Club....come for Tim Riggins, stay for the overall awesomeness. :) I got into the show January of last year and still just love it to bits and pieces, even though S4 broke my heart into a billion tiny pieces. The writing on the show is just incredible and the acting might even be better.

Tim Riggins is in my Top 5 All-Time Favorite TV Characters, and not just because he's alarmingly easy on the eyes. It's for everything that you said about him - just how solid but lost he is. So loyal and what he wants is so simple, but his life is still tragically and ridiculously difficult.

I too, have a weakness for the badboy with a heart of gold, so please tell me, who is this Brian Kinney? Which show is that? :) And, if I could make a suggestion - have you watched 'Leverage' at all? Several of the people on my flist suggested Leverage to me, assured me that I would LOVE Eliot Spencer.

At first, I was all "I don't want to watch Leverage. I didn't like the A-Team. I don't care about cons." But, just like FNL isn't about the football, Leverage isn't about the cons....it's about the people and the relationships. It's also funny, clever, and great to look at. (And Eliot Spencer...yeah, totally checks all the boxes on my TV boyfriend list.)
