ever been kidnapped
by a poet
if i were a poet
i'd kidnap you
put you in my phrases and meter
you to jones beach
or maybe coney island
or maybe just to my house
lyric you in lilacs
dash you in the rain
blend into the beach
to complement my see
play the lyre for you
ode you with my love song
anything to win you
wrap you in the red Black green
show you off to mama
yeah if i were a poet i'd kid
nap you

I am thrilled to bits to see a poem by Nikki Giovanni!!!

I met her! Back in 1990 she made a very rare trip up to Toronto to promote her book Racism 101. I brought along a copy of her 1972 album, and she was totally amazed that I had it. She signed it for me before the show, and afterward when I went in the line to get my copy of her book signed, she remembered my name and I just about fainted from glee to have Nikki Giovanni call me by my first name like that. I felt like such a shameless fangirl.

She is poised and talented and beautiful and super smart and wonderful. And she's a Star Trek fan! The show was amazing. She read form the book, and did Nikki Rosa, and she even did a version of Ego Trippin'. I was in poetry heaven!
