Somebody talk to me. I can't--I can't process this and need to work it out.

Yes, it's unbelievable. What appalls me most is the fact that it's basically just a logical continuation of current politics as far as the government is concerned. I'm enough of a cynic that I'm appalled, but not really surprised by the turn things are taking...

I'm afraid all you can do is work towards a change in the long run. Perhaps more people will realize exactly what regard the current system has for them and want a change. But right now... I can understand how you must be feeling.*hugs*

I really wish I had something helpful to say to that, but I'm afraid there isn't anything.

Though I think the only thing that will help is the pressure of public opinion, and it is happening at the moment, as far as I can tell. So speaking up wherever one can is probably the best thing to do...

What upsets me most is the fact that so much of this could have been prevented in the first place. The hurricane didn't come out of nowhere, there were several days to prepare and get the people out. Instead of sending troops now to shoot looters, these same troops could have helped evacuate people who didn't have the means to leave...

I'm afraid I don't have your kind nature, but it still takes quite a lot to make me really hate someone, and Bush managed it years ago. However, I'm surprised that he was actually stupid enough to show his true face to his own people (we outside the US are quite used to the fact that he gives a damn about the rest of the world).

He's always been out for himself and his little gang. How he ever made people overlook this and elect him is beyond me, but he did (at least, the second time round. His first "election" was also the first fine example of his views towards democracy.) And ever since, he's kept his position by trying to convince the US citizens that all the world is out to get them and that he's the only one who can protect them from the mysterious forces of evil.

His refusal to accept foreign help fits right into that system. God forbid the citizens might see that not everyone outside their borders is their sworn enemy.

You see, as a non-American, I have my own issues with Bush and his politics. I can only hope that he has gone too far this time and that the people in the US will not tolerate it anymore. Still, even if this should happen, all that suffering and destruction is a horrible price to pay for it.

I can't believe the American people are just going to stand by and let it happen.

Given the public outcry and the unusual amount of venom towards the president in the US media at the moment, I'd say they aren't. You're definitely alone with your feelings about the situation...

Yeah. [livejournal.com profile] savvyscamp was telling me last night that one of the parishes seceded from the US in an attempt to get FOREIGN aid from the government, because they were getting no help as it was. Just... WTF. And Jamaica and Germany and Canada and whomever else are trying to send aid but they're being told "no"???? JESUS.

And apparently UN and NATO have offered resources, but Bush didn't like that idea, or something. There is a whole bunch of WTF happening over in [livejournal.com profile] scarah2's post here.

It's just so so horrible. [livejournal.com profile] savvyscamp lives outside of New Orleans, and they sent some of the NO refugees to her town to get out of the superdome, etc, but some of the refugees came with their looted guns. And now her town isn't safe. And... the police seem idle, or helpless, or.... GAH.

She was telling me about a news anchor who was banging on the side of a police car, trying desperately to get help for the people in the convention center, and you know what the cop did? just sped off. I just don't get it. At all. :( :( :(

I'm here, too. We will get our first NO refugee next week. I don't know how many we'll get. Chances are, some of them will be coming to your school soon, too. I'd say you could help by seeing what the others in your community are doing. It sounds like you need to do something tangable, so maybe go volunteer at a food bank that is getting ready to send stuff out. Doing something always makes me feel better--like I'm not sitting 'round as idle as Georgy at any rate.

Oh, I'm in Texas, so I suspect that we'll be getting quite a lot of people here pretty soon. I don't know where you are... I just figure that there will probably be refugees just about everywhere pretty soon.

And.. you don't have to have money--just time. Volunteer. Food banks, the Red Cross, etc. I know that the Baptist Men will probably be doing something huge as well--they usually do. A lot of what they need right now is extra hands for packing, answering phones, etc. *shrugs* Just a suggestion.

Your cowboy president bites some serious ass.

Also, it seems to me (in a totally no-offense-meant way) that it doesn't take much for some parts of America, which is a nation that prides itself on such freedom and democracy, to collapse into looting and and give reason for martial law to be imposed.

I know, I totally understand about food, and even stuff like clothes and toiletries and stuff to make it all less disgusting and terrible. But it's the stuff that isn't necessary, like you said, with guns and cars and TVs and DVDs and vending machines and stuff.

Did any of you watch the Kayne West thing on NBC? It was during the Katrina Red Cross Fundraiser. He was standing with Mike Meyers and was saying horrible things about Bush. Then he said, "BUSH HATES BLACK PEOPLE!" And they cut him off and went to another star. I am SO GLAD he said that, although I wish he would have spoken better. I am worried that no one will take him seriously because he looked so scared and unrehearsed. But THANK GOD he said that on national TV. Bush is an idiot and so are the people who thought he could save our country.

I live in Chicago and on WLS radio yesterday the afternoon DJ was quite upset that people were blaming the lack of government involvement on race, wealth or way of life because it was going to lead to more deaths. In his opinion (and Kanye's apparently), Bush doesn’t like black people and the more attention that went to the fact that the area was primarily poor and black, the more Bush would pull away aid because he wouldn’t get any support from the other wealthy republicans. He also mentioned that many of the "wealthy" people would be less likely to assist with money if they thought that this had become more about race and less about human decency.

I read today that the reason the Red Cross and Salvation Army couldn’t get in to help anyone was because of HOMELAND SECURITY. Oh, that's working out well, isn’t it? I am SO GLAD that I am saved from the old lady bringing sewing needles on the plane and that starving, dying people are saved from the BAD, DANGEROUS, CRIMINAL people of the Red Cross. WTF!!!

Well, to all the people who voted for Bush because he promised less government involvement with people's basic rights, I hope you are happy. He couldn’t get farther away from people's basic rights than he is now.

I hear you, and understand you. I still can think of plenty of things to say! I am still too angry for silence. I've been emailing editors from all the major newspapers and am literally just writing a thank you letter to the head of the Metropolitian Community Church because she is fighting all the hatred and "it is God's will that all the Gays die" idiots.
Maybe I'll be quiet tomorrow.

You're right about the problem with fundraising. Over here so many people want to donate money and they have no idea where to send it. Hell, I want to donate, but there isn't any way to get the money to the right people. It's driving me crazy. We got money from the USA, too, when we had the great floods three years ago.

At least you know that the people in your country aren't on their own in a time like this. There's people all over the world trying to help. We can't do much since we're so far away. I don't know if our thoughts and prayers will help, too, but they certainly are with our friends in the USA.
