So I have a concussion.
Sep. 15th, 2007 08:37 pmNo for real. Grade two concussion. I spent a good chunk of the day in the emergency room today. I'm all right for the most part--dizzy, kind of shakey and obviously a huge lump and headache, but nothing too bad. The worst part is I'm kind of confused about stupid shit--I locked myself out of my room, I forgot where the stairs were, I couldn't remember why I was going somewhere, stuff like that. Or like how I just completely forgot what my next sentence was going to be. hmmm.
So story. I was playing capture the flag with my hall. We were in a turf room in the gym because it was raining, and there is a strip of concrete around the edge. I was trying to grab the flag, and I overbalanced and slammed my face into the concrete. ouch. It hurt but didn't feel too bad, so I just went back to my room and iced it. A hour or two later, when I'm throwing up and dizzy I decide I should probably call health services. The lady on the phone tells me I have to go to the emergency room right away and she'll have security come pick me up. I freak out, because she sounded freaked out, mostly. My roommate and RA went with me though, and I calmed down eventually.
I got a cat scan and was examined, determined to be mostly ok as detailed above. I do have awesome discharge instructions, telling me things like:
-Call the emergency department for the following symptoms: Fits or convulsions
-You may suffer from irritability and emotional instability. Some people may yell or say things they wouldn't normally say, or become violent. This is usually a sign that it is time to take a rest.
-You may fear you're going crazy. It is good to talk about these feelings with someone you trust.
So yeah. Concussion. What was I saying? *sigh* Time for movies.

Date: 2007-09-16 03:55 pm (UTC)It was really scary, actually--not the actual thing itself, but the not getting better part, and then the talking to the nurse part. Nothing like thinking you're mostly ok and then hearing an official person being like "omg you need to go to the emergency room right now I'm sending over a security car go." So I kind of freaked out and cried and then cried more at the hospital because that's what I do but eventually got hold of myself. which was good. And the doctors (yes, plural, I think I probably saw six different people, not even counting the orderlies who wheeled me to the cat scan place because they wouldn't let me walk.) anyway, the doctors were really nice, which helped.
so yeah. scary. but better now. still a little confused, but not so bad. my head hurt like fuck when I woke up, and actually I slept really badly and kept waking up all confused. but, point of story, I took some ibuprofen with my breakfast and it's starting to kick in, which is good.

Date: 2007-09-16 04:02 pm (UTC)the cat scan was pretty nifty. except for the woman moaning in pain next to me. I laid down on the little table thing, and it moved me forward into a little halo thing around my head, and then the insides of that spun around very fast photographing me, then the table moved me back like half an inch and it did it all again until I was out of the scanner.

Date: 2007-09-16 04:20 pm (UTC)Lol at your hospital instructions, though. They're really quite amusing. "This is usually a sign that it is time to take a rest," ahahaha. I hope you continue to feel better and feel less confused! ♥

Date: 2007-09-16 08:02 pm (UTC)I'm sure it was! People can be so stupid! I'm glad they were nice, at least, but way to freak a person out! I've had a concussion before and I totally know what you mean about the bad sleeping and confused waking up and whatnot. Eeesh. I hope that goes away really soon! Ibuprofen is love. Go Advil, go! :P
Let us pretend that we're having an afternoon of watching romantic comedies (hee!) on a sofa where there are no other people about, eating chocolate. Yes. This would be good. *imagines*
