Why this piece is awesome: Excellent expressive brushwork, and Matt looking typically whumped (seriously, he's about the most whumped character in all of television, surely!). I love the darkness and barely suggested city, and that Matt's likeness is perfect even though all we can see is his lower face. Very atmospheric!

Title: Lovers and Liars
Gaining Access: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11812929?view_full_work=true
Author: eilonwy (eilonwy1)
Word Count: ~18.7K
Alternate Links to Fic: n/a
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger
Rating: Mature (PG-15/R)
Author's Summary: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Hermione is determined never to make the same mistake again that she’d made once with Draco Malfoy. When he waltzes back into her life after a year’s absence, her resolve is put to the test.
Author's Website: on Livejournal, on AO3

Why everyone should read this:
Eilonwy never fails to deliver a tale that entertains, pulls at your heartstrings, and makes you want to re-read it over and over again. Here, she's done it again!

Written for the 2017 dramione_remix fest, her prompt was Beatrice and Benedict from "Much Ado About Nothing" by Shakespeare. Here, Hermione and Draco were in business partners and in love, but his fear of commitment led Draco into a series of bad decisions that ended everything between them a year before the story begins. Neither of them could forget the other, however. Their meddling, well-intentioned friends (Blaise, Theo, Harry, Ginny, Luna, Padma, Lavender, and Ron) all decide to get the two back together with a series of cleverly scripted lies dropped at just the right time. Will it be enough, however, to break through Hermione's anger and resentment and to give a shot of much-needed courage to Draco?

Three chapters packed with wonderful plot, gorgeous descriptions, and characters you'll fall in love with for all their foibles. Definitely, give this one a read and a review! Don't forget to 'favourite' it, too, yeah?

Excerpt:

The post would be there soon, she noted, glancing at her watch. She’d been expecting a shipment of an especially rare floral compound from Bali, used by native people for centuries. It was one she’d read about with great excitement, because its properties, derived from the Frangipani flower, were alleged to be powerful healers.

The “Open” sign was in the door and now it only remained for the first customers to wander in. It was a lovely, bright morning, a fine day for strolling about the town. Surely it wouldn’t be long.

Right on time, the postman arrived, bearing the much-anticipated parcel. Eagerly, Hermione tore open the wrapping and began to examine the literature accompanying the compound, which was tightly stoppered in a small, purple vial.

“Bali, eh? What’ve you got there?”

Startled, Hermione’s head snapped up and she found herself looking her ex-lover in the eye. So much for “never.” Crap. How could she have been so careless? She’d warded her flat, but in her haste, she’d forgotten all about the shop. Setting the vial down, she laced her fingers together and gazed at him coolly.

“What are you doing here? Slumming?”

One eyebrow and a corner of Draco’s mouth lifted in a barely perceptible half smile. “Hardly,” he drawled. “The place actually looks decent. Better than decent.”

Hermione’s eyes narrowed. “Gosh, thanks. I’m overwhelmed. Answer the question, Malfoy.”

“Haven’t I? Yes, well, I’ve come to inspect the premises.” He smiled pleasantly, his cool, grey eyes betraying only amusement at the joke she didn’t yet understand.

“Inspect the…?” She began to laugh. “You’ve really lost the plot, Malfoy. You have no reason to ‘inspect the premises,’ as you put it. You have no interest in it anymore, remember? You sold your half to me.”

“Ah, yes. True enough. But I do own the building now. Which makes me –”

“My landlord.” Hermione’s voice was flat with disbelief.

Begun bhorta, a recipe

Take one elderly eggplant that you bought last week from the manager's special shelf at Kroger and completely forgot about. Cut into it to check it's gone all dry and papery. But no, its flesh is as fleshy as a much younger eggplant. Cut into largeish chunks. Peel several cloves of garlic and throw into the bowl with the eggplant.

Heat up one large pot of water -- or in my case, the enameled dutch oven I bought from the thrift store last month, which is big and as yellow as an egg yolk. Salt generously. Bring to a boil. Add eggplant and garlic. Cover and bring down to a simmer. Eggplant will be cooked in about ten minutes, depending on how cooperative your stove is (mine is an electric and does what it wants.)

Meanwhile, prepare the vinaigrette: three parts extra virgin olive oil, one part apple cider. Add a dollop of Dijon mustard (from the largest and cheapest bottle you could find at the store) and a teaspoon of honey. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour into a bottle with a sure lid and close. Shake furiously until emulsified & emotionally satisfied.

On a slightly cracked wooden chopping board cut up one small onion and as many Thai chilies as you can handle (from five to zero) and mince finely. Salt and pepper. Mix in vinaigrette.

Remember the eggplant, it's probably overcooked but what the hell. This is a old fashioned recipe and people in the past didn't care about overcooking their vegetables (irresponsible generalization). Drain the water and put the eggplant into a colander. Get rid of as much excess water as you can, though you won't be able to get rid of it all. Add to the onion-chili-vinaigrette mix. Squish. Mix. Consider using the food processor to make a more uniform blend but really, why bother? This isn't baba ganoush, after all.

Serve with rice and dal or something similarly bland. It packs quite a zing.

Bhortas are culturally and culinarily significant for Bengalis -- it's something that everyone's had and will have again. The word itself only means a mash -- anything could be a bhorta, but the most common are potatoes, tomatoes and the like. Often, people cook the vegetable over a flame (or over a gas range) for a nice char.

Traditionally, begun bhorta is made with mustard oil, but you can't buy a bottle of mustard oil in America that isn't sternly labeled 'For external use only' -- you feel like you're breaking the law if you're doing anything else (although now I'm suddenly wondering if anyone's ever used mustard oil as lube -- talk about a tingling sensation) so a robust olive oil will have to do. And some mustard too, to keep some of the mustard flavor.

Eggplants are wonderful things. I'm sorry I forgot this one and I'm glad it forgave me and allowed me to have a wonderful dinner anyway.

Friday night, L and I went out for dinner for her birthday to a newish place in the neighborhood, and it was so nice. Expensive, but really nice. Burrata stuffed ravioli with roasted grape tomatoes! Steak frites! Moscato! And I had this delicious Café liégeois for dessert.

Yesterday, I started watching s1 of Wynonna Earp, as recommended by some of you, and I'm enjoying it so far, though it is also making me miss the first two seasons of Supernatural, or more accurately, Dean Winchester. This show is sisters fighting demons, and while writing-wise it's about the same level as SPN (though nothing quite sticks in my head like, "We were raised like warriors, Dean!" there have been a couple of moments where something happens, and then the rest of the episode acts like it didn't happen? And I don't mean lingering plot threads for later. I mean, like, the writers forgot what just happened previously?), but it has a lot fewer dead ladies so far spoiler ), and also Waverly, who is THE BEST NO LIE. is this a spoiler? ) The special effects are kind of 90s syndication terrible, but I don't mind that much. I don't even mind the love triangle that much, because Wynonna is just going to do what she wants, instead of being torn between the two choices, both of whom are interesting int heir own ways (though I personally would choose Dolls, despite whatever secrets he's been keeping; at least you know he didn't sleep with your great-great-grandfather).

I guess I'll finish season 1 tonight, and then see if I can track down where season 2 is streaming. (as an aside, I started watching this because Killjoys - also recommended by many of you - is still not on Netflix. Why?)

Now I have a terrible headache, which is not being helped by the Giants being terrible. Sigh. At least hockey starts soon?

eta: I guess I shouldn't complain too much - the Giants have just stormed back with 3 TDs in the 4th to take the lead.

eta 2: I take it back. I was right the first time.

Remix of: to paint a symphony by [archiveofourown.org profile] Arzani

I actually matched on Black Sails, but none of [archiveofourown.org profile] Arzani's fics in that fandom gave me much of an idea, partly because I'm not a Flint/Silver shipper. But The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is such an interesting canon - I've written a couple of stories for it already - and when I read "to paint a symphony" I immediately wanted to tease out the thread in which Keita plays the different compositions Thaniel might make in the future based on what choices he makes about Grace, and Thaniel sees them in different colors, and write my version of that story. (If you haven't read the book, this won't make much sense. But it's been nominated for Yuletide again this year, if you're thinking about reading it. It has a m/m relationship and a mechanical octopus.)

1. Although it is after the autumn equinox in my hemisphere, it is unseasonably warm right now, so I am grateful for air conditioning, even if I feel ridiculous using it on September 24!

2. Apple-picking with Mr. Kid today! This is one of our fall traditions and it is so sweet. The orchard is near our old house. Rows and rows of beautiful apple trees stretching toward fields and hills. And we got two bags of honeycrisps, my favorite apples of them all.

3. Related to the above, there is a granola-topped apple crisp cooling now on my counter. I'm also making a chicken curry in the slow cooker to eat all week, and I've cooked up some ground turkey and vegetables with soy and sesame and cilantro and will add rice noodles to them later for dinner tonight.

4. Dishwasher (now running) and washing machine (also now running.) The fact that we have these appliances; the fact that we have power with which to run them.

5. Watching Mr. Kid gleefully play with Mr. Kitten, who has a catnip mouse and is carrying it proudly around the room in his mouth. I can't tell whether the catnip is making the kitten goofier, or whether this is just his natural three-month-old goofitude, but either way, it's adorbs.

Title: Singularity
Gaining Access: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11982615?view_full_work=true
Author: dormiensa
Word Count: ~14K
Alternate Links to Fic: n/a
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger
Rating: Teen and Up (PG-13)
Author's Summary: An unexpected confrontation leads to repeated meetings over the years.
Author's Website: On AO3, On Fanfiction.net, On Livejournal

Why everyone should read this:
This was such a gorgeously-wrought, bittersweet take on the "meeting once a year" trope. It literally brought me to tears, and left me aching, despite the fact it satisfactorily resolves the connundrum of how two people crossing dimensions and time might end up happily-ever-after somehow. Love, it seems, finds a way.

Written for the 2017 dramione_remix fest, her prompt was Dexter and Emma from the movie, "One Day". Draco lives in a world where the Dark Lord won the war, and Hermione is the one from the novel canon reality, where Harry vanquished Voldemort. Due to an odd magical ripple on the day of Harry's win, a small pocket opens up between the two worlds, trapping Draco and Hermione (who happened to be standing in that exact spot at that moment) inside it. It doesn't release them until dawn the next day, so the two are literally trapped together for hours with nothing to do but talk...and learn. Over the span of 20 years, they wordlessly agree to meet once a year in the same odd magical space, and over that time, they become confidants, friends, and then significantly more.

Dormiensa does a fantastic job of giving us snippets of the progression of this lovely relationship, whose only purpose seems to be in righting the two universes. Read the end notes by the author to ground you in the year when the events transpired (it allows you to fill in the missing bits in between with your imagination, but it's obvious what's occurred by the text). Grab your tissues and be prepared for your emotions to flow!

Excerpt:

“I’m not suffering a concussion, thanks for your concern. In my world, it’s May 2, 1998.”

“What do you mean ‘your world’?”

“Is Voldemort alive or dead?”

Draco hissed. “How dare you speak the Dark Lord’s name, you filthy M—” But he paused and looked about expectantly. When nothing happened, he refocussed on her and said in a slower and more deadlier tone. “What do you mean ‘your world’?”

“Harry defeated Voldemort in my world. I assume he’s dead in yours.”

Draco gaped. A sudden thought had him scrambling to his feet and looking carefully at the environment beyond the barrier. When he finally sat down again, he stared at the ground, lost in thought.

Having finally wrapped his mind around his new reality, he looked up. “How did I get here?”

“I don’t know.”

Dear Frank-
Years ago I started writing notes and putting them in random places like behind paintings in hotels, between the pages at book stores and in Sky Mall Magazines on airplanes. While browsing through a PostSecret book, I found one of my notes. That small ripped piece of paper is featured above. I attended your event last week at CMU. I’m thankful for your ability to speak to people in their broken places.

At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloguing the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: "degenerate" works he despised. In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture. Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.

It's the book the movie was based on. I really wanted to see the move, but couldn't get past my dislike of movies with George Clooney and/or Matt Damon.
A note about the movie: Among those leaked e-mails from Sony studios was one from Clooney (who directed as well as acted) apologizing for the movie not doing very well. My brother saw it on one of those "entertainment news" shows where they tried to make it seem like it was a bad thing, but my brother said: "If anything, it makes him seem like an even nicer guy than you hear about. that whole "gentleman George" thing,"

The book was interesting, if long & is one of those forgotten stories of World War 2 that more people should know about it. To that end, they have an official site about the real men (& women) behind the story. And there's a monuments men foundation to help preserve art that is in danger from armed conflicts today. they are also looking for info on missing cultural objects from WW2 & other wars.

I've read several books about little known or forgotten people & stories of WW2 & am convinced that if a movie studio just did movies about them, they could put out movies for at least a decade.

In case you were wondering...
